Solana Architecture and Key Concepts

Solana separates a program’s instructions from the data it changes. Think of a program as the rules of a game, and data accounts as the saved scores.

The basics

  • Accounts hold data and SOL balances; each has an address and an owner program.
  • An instruction names a program, supplies accounts and describes the requested action.
  • A transaction groups instructions. Programs can process independent accounts in parallel, while conflicting writes must be coordinated.

Try it yourself

Sketch a scorekeeping app: one program, two player data accounts, and an instruction to update a score. Which account must change for each player?
