Web Security Tools and Methodologies

Modern web security assessment relies on a small, well-understood toolkit rather than any single "magic" scanner: an intercepting proxy, a source-aware static analysis pass, and a disciplined methodology for moving from recon to exploitation to reporting.

Key concepts

  • Burp Suite (or OWASP ZAP) is the daily driver for any web assessment — intercepting, repeating and fuzzing requests.
  • Static analysis (manual code review, or tools like Semgrep) catches classes of bugs dynamic testing alone will miss, especially business-logic flaws.
  • A written methodology (OWASP Web Security Testing Guide) keeps assessments consistent and reduces the chance of missing a whole vulnerability class.
  • Every finding needs both a proof-of-concept AND a plain-language explanation of business impact — tooling output alone is not a deliverable.

Try it yourself

Pick one OWASP Web Security Testing Guide category (e.g. "Testing for Cross-Site Scripting") and read its testing methodology end-to-end, noting the specific test cases it recommends before you would call the check "done".
