Setting Up Your Development Environment

You can start learning in your browser with Solana Playground. A local setup gives you more control later, but it is not required for your first lesson.

The basics

  • Use the official quick start to open Playground and create a fresh development wallet.
  • Choose Devnet, a public practice network. Its test SOL is for development, not spending.
  • For local work, the main tools are Rust, the Solana CLI, Node.js and Anchor, a framework that simplifies program development. Follow the official installation guide for compatible versions.

Try it yourself

Open a new Anchor project in Playground and locate the program source file. Build the unchanged template first so you know your environment works.
